The Sookraj family of New Amsterdam will soon be opening the “Outback Adventures” – a Family Fun Park and Recreational Resort located at Gold Stone Hall Village, East Canje.
The small community is situated between Betsy Ground Village and Gangaram Village. Twenty-three-year-old University of Guyana student, Havendra Sookraj told the Department of Public Information (DPI) he had noted the need for more recreational facilities and this is what inspired his idea. Havendra is the second child of Robindra and Indira Sookraj, owners of a popular general store in New Amsterdam. He also has an older sister and a younger brother who recently graduated from the University of Guyana, Berbice campus.
According to Havendra, with the availability of a large plot of land owned by his parents, he began drafting several designs, before approaching his parents with his final plan for the park. After several months, his parents decided to commence the construction works. Havendra spearheaded the design and his parents financed the project at a cost of $35M. The park is currently open despite works are still ongoing.
However, in two months’ time when it is slated to be officially opened the fun park and resort will have a spacious swimming pool for both adults and children, a swim-up bar and poolside space, both indoor and outdoor dining facilities, a restaurant, spacious benabs and boat rides. The compound will also be equipped with a club/lounge, a karaoke section and also a conference hall.
According to Havendra, this is just one of several plans his family has planned that will tremendously boost tourism opportunities in Berbice. Young Sookraj further noted that the fun park and resort will also create job opportunities for many in Berbice especially the East Canje area.
Havendra said while ‘Outback Adventures’ will now satisfy Berbicians it has been built to also attract visitors from all across Guyana.
