Youth Village officially launched

The first-ever Youth Village in Guyana is now officially open. The Village was launched at the D’Urban Park, on Friday, with scores of young adults and children in attendance.

At the opening ceremony, Minister of Social Cohesion, Hon. Dr. George Norton told the youths that the event was designed for them and to grasp every opportunity they have to better themselves and by extension the country.

“The establishment up of this Youth Village was done deliberately and intentionally to showcase the incredible cadre of young Guyanese who will inherit the mission of building this already great nation.”

“Be sure to make this village count, it is an ideal set-up that can help you achieve great things for yourselves, your family and this great nation,” he urged.

Dr. Norton also reminded them that the activity conforms with the Coalition Government’s mission to ensure that youths have access to opportunities to develop themselves and assured tthem hat the administration would continue to invest in their development especially as it related to education.

“The dictum of our President, His Excellency David Granger, is that education has a ripple development effect, throughout all sectors and areas of life,” Minister Norton stated.

Regional Information Officer of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara, Ganesh Mahipaul advocated for unity among youths, while noting the Government’s commitment to this generation.

“The focus on young people in the last few years has been extraordinary. And we have seen the commitment by your government towards ensuring that we gear this country so that young people can be poised for rapid take-off,” Mahipaul stated.

Also, the Acting Director of Youth, Leslyn Boyce, said she was confident that the youths would be unified irrespective of their “gender, ethnicity, geographical location, political preference, or sexual orientation.”

The event featured art and craft displays and a range of educational and employment opportunities. It is part of the Department of Social Cohesion’s calendar of activities for the 50th anniversary of republican status under the theme: Guyana Together: Reflect, Celebrate, Transform.

The Youth Village continues on Saturday from 2:00 pm at D’Urban Park where attendees can expect more exhibitions, musical performances, a Zumba party and talent fiesta among other activities.
