DPI, Guyana, Thursday, May 14, 2020

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) reported that as of 02:00 hours today, 28 ballot boxes were completed; ten for Region 1, four for Region 2, seven for Region 3 and another seven for Region 4.

A total of 98 out of the 99 boxes for Region 1 were completed at the end of the day. The remaining ballot box was wet and has been put aside pending a decision by the commission on the way forward concerning the content of this box.

During her daily update of the recount, GECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Yolanda Ward announced that the commission had decided to empty the box and place the contents in a secure location to dry.

“As we speak those contents are out the box and placed in the sun to see what we will be able to discern later this afternoon…once they can be examined by the commission, then a determination will be made as to whether they will continue with the counting of that box or what other necessary decision they will need to take,” Ward told the media.

The PRO also disclosed that with the counting of Region 1 completed except for the one box, the recount for Region 5 commenced.

As of 02:00 pm today, 82 of the 135 boxes were completed for Region 2; Region 3, 107 out of 355; Region 4, 103 out of 879; and Region 5, 158 have to be counted.
