Another medical team deployed to Waramadong to curb Covid spike

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony says another medical team has been deployed to Waramadong village, Region Seven after 27 new COVID-19 cases were recorded there over the weekend.

A team was deployed to the community on Friday to determine the number of Covid positive cases there.  After the assessment, a doctor was stationed in the village to support the team on the ground, while the team that was deployed travelled to other villages in the Upper Mazaruni to conduct testing.

However, with the recorded results, additional steps would be taken to curb transmission of the disease.

“There is an ongoing discussion about those measures and we will be working with the community to ensure that we reduce the number of cases. However, those persons who tested positive are currently in isolation,” Dr. Anthony said during Monday’s COIVD-19 Update.

Currently, Waramadong’s community centre is being used as an isolation facility. One of the four dormitories of the Waramadong Secondary School is also being utilised as an isolation centre for students who tested positive.

Dr. Anthony said the Ministry is considering imposing a lockdown on the village as it had done in other affected communities and regions to reduce transmission.

“It is an active discussion since lockdown means that you have to restrict everything going in and out of the village and so forth…. Whether that is logistically possible is something we have to discuss with its village leadership. So, while we have initiated this discussion there is no conclusion,” the Minister said.

As of Monday, the village had 71 active cases while the wider Cuyuni-Mazaruni Region had recorded 722 cases.
