Clonbrook top girl gets bursary

─ Aspiring paediatrician placed at Bishops’ High School

L-Dee Johnson, a bright-eyed 11-year-old Clonbrook Primary School student, will begin her secondary education at the Bishops’ High School this September.

Johnson was awarded a place at the Sixth Form school following the announcement of the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) results on Wednesday, July 3, 2019.
Her narrative was adjudged the ‘Best Composition’ out of the approximately 14,300 compositions written in the English Paper 2 examination.
Reading her piece at the announcement of the NGSA results was Director of NCERD, Jennifer Cumberbatch. The presentation was followed by resounding applause and commendation from the Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry.
Speaking exclusively to the Department of Public Information (DPI), an excited Johnson said Bishops’ High School was her dream school from a tender age. “I feel really great! I wanted to go since I was a little girl.”
Asked about the inspiration for her piece, she remarked her motivation came from the many stories she has read over the sum of her years.
“When I heard that I [was awarded the best composition] I was very surprised, because I didn’t know I was capable of doing that and I just am really proud,” Johnson said.

She also shared that the passing of her father did not deter her from doing her best at the examinations. “I didn’t let it affect me, and I wrote the best composition I could,” she remarked.
The young, aspiring paediatrician cited her reason for wanting to be involved in the field. “I like helping children because they’re going to be the next generation so we have to take the best care of them that we can.”
The young lass hails from the Ann’s Grove area on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) and has received an outpouring of love and support from the residents of the Ann’s Grove catchment area.
At a community meeting held on Wednesday at the Ann’s Grove Secondary School, Minister Henry, after meeting young L-Dee, announced that given her outstanding performance, the government through the Ministry of Education would be providing the incoming Bishops’ High School with a bursary.
The bursary will ease the financial costs of attending the city school and will allow Johnson to perform her best at the institution.
