Culture, religion, cohesion highlighted as Berbicians celebrate Int’l Women’s Day

As Guyana observed International Women’s Day on Friday, hundreds of women who had gathered in the town of New Amsterdam were charged to maintain their integrity and promote their strength as women.

The grand occasion was hosted by the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council (M&TC), through its Social Development Committee.

Mayor of New Amsterdam, Winifred Heywood, while urging women to stand firm against any challenges, reminded of the struggles endured by several female leaders who in the end were triumphant.

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us remember to continue working towards betterment. Let’s press for progress. Progress does not come easily, but ladies, we can continue to make a difference and as we work together, I want you to help me to take New Amsterdam to victory… As we celebrate, let us work for change and make it happen. We can make it happen!” Mayor Heywood emphasised.

Committee Chairwoman, Councillor Patricia Lynch noted that the initiative was planned by the municipality to recognise hard-working women in the town, “… we know our women are more enthused to take up the leadership mantle,” she remarked.

The event which took the form of a cultural alliance saw attendees dressed in their Indian, Amerindian and African outfits. Additionally, there was also a category for women in uniforms; which highlighted women in the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), Guyana Police Force (GPF), Municipal’s Constabulary, New Amsterdam Post Office and Public Health Service (PHS).

The packed auditorium was also entertained by cultural presentations and several exhibition booths. The M&TC has several other programmes to honour women in the town as they have scheduled 16 days of activism.

On March 8 every year, the world recognises International Women’s Day. The day is observed as a focal point in the movement for women’s rights.
