The Regional Administration of Region Three, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara has its eyes fixed on a September 2018 “Open Day” for the Early Childhood Educational Centre located at Leonora, WCD. It is a facility offering daycare to preschool and nursery school children, enabling parents to work fulltime.

The administration received the completed building in the month of July 2018 from the Basic Needs Trust Fund and the Ministry of Finance.

The Regional Executive Officer (REO) Denis Jaikaran said at that time that the administration will establish a committee that will include representatives from the RDC, health and education departments as well as those attached to the centre to assist in the maintenance and management of the centre.

The establishment of the centre was a collaborative effort between the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF), Regional Administration and the Office of Presidential Advisor on Youth Empowerment Unit (PAYEU).

The Board of Governors had their first meeting yesterday, Thursday, August 16, 2018. The Board is currently in the process of constructing the vision and mission statements, objectives, application, registration and agreement forms, guidelines and rules governing the centre, an admission register, staff attendance records, supervision of the centre, security and curriculum for the centre among others.

The facility includes four care areas/classrooms, a sleeping area, sick-bay, a staff room, an administrative area, storage spaces, a kitchenette, a laundry room, sanitary facilities, and an outdoor play area for the children. The facility caters for a maximum of 45 children.

The Board of Governors is chaired by Regional Education Officer Annesta Douglas. Other members include Vaughn Solomon, Shameer Shahid, Shameer Arjune, Ganesh Mahipaul, Elaine Hamilton, Ann Boston, Mavis Harris, a representative from the police and fire services and Zalika Williams from Childcare and Protection Agency. The Regional Executive Officer will sit as an Ex-Officio.
