scores of Corriverton residents now land owners

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, November 28, 2019

Scores of Corriverton residents in Region Six received an early Christmas gift from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA). After waiting years received their house lots today.  This was made possible through a land allocation outreach.

Leshwantie Abrahim was one of many who received their lots at No. 75 Village recalled that she had for a lot way back in 2007. The elated woman said, “I am happy to have finally gotten a house lot!”

According to Abrahim, after years of paying rent, she currently resides in a small section of her grandmother’s house with her son, daughter and husband. However, very soon living in a tight space will be a thing of the past.  “I am happy that I will be able to build a house and furnish it with everything so it is a good feeling right now,” she stated.

Sonia Gravesande said she too is relieved that the wait is over.  Gravesande explained that she submitted her application in 2000 but was denied because she was unmarried and had no children. Frustrated, Gravesande said she re-applied in 2006 and was again denied. However, in 2016, she made her third try and was today rewarded.

“I must give God thanks because without him I could not have gotten this,” she remarked. She further pointed out that she “kept praying for this. only a few nights ago I was talking to my husband and we were considering to purchase a house and land. He was telling me to go to the bank to see if there were any for sale. However, I am happy that I can now build the house that I want to build.”

Now that she is a landowner Gravesande said that will be looking to start her family very soon, adding children to the picture.

Also receiving his house lot was businessman Alvin Harry who operates the Corriverton to Georgetown route. Harry, who applied as far back as 2000, thanked the government, noting that he will soon be able to construct a house of his own and live comfortably with his family.

“I am happy that I can put up my own house and I will be start building as early as possible… my children will get their own space and will be able to decide what they want to do if they want to come with me or stay with their grandmother,” Harry stated.

Minister within the Ministry of Communities with responsible for Housing Hon. Annette Ferguson, who led the team of officials from CH&PA, said that the government has been working diligently to ensure lands are made available so that Guyanese can benefit.

“I know for a fact that lives can be transformed. While we want to see our roads fixed, the major need for any human is having a roof over their head,” she said.

Minister Ferguson told the residents that the Coalition government since taking office has created several housing solutions to ensure citizens can enjoy a good life as promised.

“The whole focus of your government is to ensure that we provide everyone with a suitable housing solution,” Minister Ferguson underscored.

Lands were allocated in No. 75 Village, No. 79 Village, Williamsburg and Hampshire.
