Government calls on contractors to use local talent

GINA, GUYANA, Thursday, October 06, 2016

Contractors are being urged to employ residents from the community where government contracts and projects are being executed.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, said this would boost economic activity and ensure a better quality of work is executed. The minister hosted a post Cabinet media conference today, at the Ministry of the Presidency.

“We have made a point, once these contracts are awarded, to ask the contractors to ensure that local content, local labour from the works that is taking place in these communities,” Harmon said.

According to Harmon, it is because of this position of the government that many residents have benefited from employment and even from being able to execute sub-contracted work on state sponsored projects.

In many cases, community projects have been improved with the help of local knowledge and workers. The government has also stressed that as residents become involved with community projects, they have a better sense of ownership of the project.

Is the second time that Minister Harmon has publicly called on contractors to hire persons from the communities. In November 2015, while announcing Cabinet’s No Objection to several contracts for road works around the city, the minister had urged residents to pay close attention to the works being done by the contractors and to report any problems to the inspectors, the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils and to the Regional Democratic Councils.
