Government looking at mentorship programme to help students
GINA, GUYANA, Tuesday, October 11, 2016
The Government, through the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, will soon roll out a programme to help young people make career choices.
Director of Youth, Melissa Carmichael, in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA), said that the programme will align students with successful young persons in various careers.
The mentorship programme will target students of all ages.
According to Carmichael, the main reason for the programme is the realisation that many youths aspire to professions but they need someone to motivate them. “Someone or some person should be there to mentor you and to mold you and to shape you, give you advice, tell you about challenges, tell you about the threats to your career and this is what we are trying to establish,” Carmichael explained.
To be selected as a mentor, the person would have had to successfully complete their educational programme and would have started or now starting their careers.
“We are planning to have further discussions with the persons who we are trying to select as mentors and from those discussions, we go into various schools where we have a post-secondary connection,” the Director of Youth said.
The programme will focus on all possible careers including those in the legal, medical, engineering, teaching, agriculture and other fields.
