Gov’t on right path to improving economic circumstances- MP Rutherford

GINA, Guyana, Monday,  December 5, 2016

Government Member of Parliament (MP), Audwin Rutherford said that Government is taking the right steps to improve the country’s economic circumstances, and is doing so democratically.

Delivering his presentation in the National Assembly today, during the debate on the 2017 estimates and expenditure, the MP noted that since Government took office there were several challenges experienced due to inheriting poor sectors including “sugar which was dying and rice which was sleeping”.

The 2017 National Budget, presented on November 28 is valued $250 Billion.

MP Rutherford contended that all of  Budget’s interventions will chart a course for national development which will encompass the benefits of a green economy. Rutherford listed as an example the construction of hinterland and coastland roads which  will benefit all “without fear or bias”. He posited that at the end of 2017, all Guyanese will find that they have progressed.

Focusing of Region 10, which he represents, MP Rutherford noted that large sums of money have

already been spent and the communities are benefitting. With some $2.9 billion allocated in Budget 2017, agriculture, transportation, education, health and other sectors within his region will improve, Rutherford explained.

The MP added  that Region 10 has the best student to teacher ratio and the best school athletics programme which are testimonies to the efforts being made to cater for youths and education within the Region.

Meanwhile, Opposition MP, Harry Gill echoed his colleagues’ call  to urge the withdrawal of the Budget. Gill recalled the themes under which the Government presented its two previous Budgets.

According to the Opposition MP, there are no economic plans to really “give all the good life.”

MP Gill spoke of the promises made by President David Granger when in opposition, and said that many persons such as teachers and nurses are still underpaid.
