GPL delivered on promise to meet demand over holiday season

―isolated cases of interruption resolved swiftly

The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) was able to meet demand and deliver stable electricity to the population over the Christmas holiday season.

GPL’s Director of Operations, Mr. Bharrat Harjohn, in an interview with DPI on Sunday, said the company largely delivered on its promise to keep the lights on.

“We had sufficient generation. We were able to meet and satisfy demand.”

Mr. Harjohn said GPL’s average generating capacity was 150 megawatts during the festive season, with a peak demand of 118 megawatts on Christmas Eve Day and Old Year’s Day.

“We just had a few isolated cases along our distribution network, but other than that there was no major issue of outages.”

Further, the emergency response teams were equipped to promptly address the few interruptions that occurred, he added.

Back in November, GPL rolled out several measures to increase power generation, particularly for the Christmas season.

This includes the acquisition of 4.5MW of power from Giftland Mall through a Power Purchasing Agreement and the installation of new gensets that produce 10MW of electricity.

GPL’s performance through the holidays is testament to the Administration’s pledge to make interventions that will curtail, and eventually eliminate the scourge of blackouts that has plagued the nation for years.
