Help coming for Agricola church

Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Hon. Charles Ramson Jr. has committed to help St. Anne’s parishioners clear clogged drains to alleviate flooding in the area.

For a long-time, residents of Agricola especially those who attend the St. Anne’s Anglican Church have had to deal with flooding during the rainy season. Help is finally on the way.

On Saturday, the Culture Youth and Sport Minister visited the community as part of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s youth development initiative, and stopped at the church where he spoke with parishioners including music instructor, Christopher Rockcliffe.

During their brief exchange, the minister was told about the flooding situation and his help was requested. He later told DPI of the commitment.

“The church has flooding issues; I have spoken to the pastor and have asked him to organise some people from the community so that we could help in getting those drains cleared,” he said.

Once this is completed, Minister Ramson Jr. said he hopes the problem does not recur. Originally called the St. Anne’s Chapel School, the building was opened on February 7, 1859, However, sometime during 1914 a fire of unknown origin destroyed the building. It was rebuilt a year later with the Church and School separate and it has remained that way to this day.
