Higher education is empowering- Minister Walrond

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Hon. Oneidge Walrond says the attainment of higher education is the pathway to empowerment and alleviating poverty.

She made the statement on Tuesday, during the launch of the Government’s online scholarships programme at Victoria and Cove and John, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The Government aims to make 20,000 online scholarships available to citizens through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL), irrespective of their educational background or socioeconomic status.

“This is not a political movement. This is an attempt to give into what matters. This is an attempt to build you up.

When you are educated, nobody can take that degree from you. In fact, education-higher education builds you up with the capacity to think for yourself.”

This staff assists these prospective scholars with their applications.

Minister Walrond told citizens that the Administration has partnered with accredited institutions from several countries that will provide a wide cross-section of programmes. These will encompass certificates, bachelor’s degrees, post graduate diplomas, master’s degrees and later doctoral degrees.

As the head of a sector that partly covers the growing hospitality industry, Minister Walrond encouraged applicants to seek programmes that are needed in Guyana’s development.

Over at the Guyana Women’s Institute in Cove and John, small business owner, Ms. Kayshanti Ramdular said GOAL will equip her with the knowledge needed to strengthen her business managerial capacity.

Further, the entrepreneur said that GOAL, “is an amazing opportunity” for growth.

Reflecting on the available options for tertiary study during her formative years, Ms. Ramdular said, “I wish when I got out of high school, there was something like this to look forward to. I think that this would definitely give hope to a lot of people that don’t have the support of their parents, that don’t have financial support.”

Assistant Director of Youth, Mr. Suresh Singh accompanied Minister Walrond at both outreaches.

The scholarships initiative is a partnership between the Ministries of Education and Public Service.
