Hosororo Primary gets ICT pilot programme

—5,000 students to eventually benefit

The Hosororo Primary School in Region 1 (Barima-Waini) has been chosen for a pilot ICT programme which will eventually reach over 5,000 students across Guyana.

The ProFuturo project centres on teachers and the students utilising tablets, laptops and other technology for the delivery of lessons in the classroom.

Currently, more than 440 teachers from 28 schools across Guyana are receiving training for the fuller project rollout.

Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton also attended the launch at Hosororo Primary School.

Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Nicolette Henry had last May signed an agreement with ProFuturo Foundation and the Organization of American States for the programme’s introduction locally.

Dr. Henry, on Monday, noted that of the five Caribbean countries chosen to benefit from the technical assistance agreement, only Guyana met the necessary implementation criteria to launch the programme.

According to Dr. Henry, 21^st century technology-enabled learning is a must in the reform of the education curriculum; a process last undertaken in 1976.

She added that the project also demonstrated the government’s commitment to reducing the disparities between the coast and hinterland communities.

Launched in 2016, ProFuturo aims to narrow the education gap globally by providing quality digital education for children in vulnerable environments in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

Among those to benefit are Mabaruma, Barabina, Wauna, All Saints, Betsy Ground, Cumberland, Edinburg, Fort Ordinance, Gangaram, New Amsterdam, Overwinning, Rose Hall Estate, Sandvoort, Sheet Anchor, Lochaber, St. Aloysius, St. Therese’s, Amelia’s Ward, Coomacka, McKenzie, One Mile, Regma, St. Aidens, Watooka Day, Wismar Hill, Christianburg, and Bamia Primary Schools.
