Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence officially commissioned a newly constructed seven-apartment nurses’ quarters for those at the Lethem Regional Hospital on March 2.
This has been in the pipeline for some time and has now been made possible after budgetary allocations were made in 2018 to complete the project.
Minister Lawrence also handed over an Ultrasound Machine to the Lethem Regional Hospital. This critical piece of equipment will aid in the screening and monitoring of pregnant women while identifying high-risk pregnancy cases. This will contribute significantly to the reduction of maternal deaths in the region.
An ambulance was also presented to Annai to transport emergency cases from the community to the regional hospital at any given time.
Region 9’s Regional Health Officer, Dr. Nial Uthman briefed the minister on what is happening in the region’s health sector along with what can be expected during the course of 2019. He received the keys to the new ambulance and the documents for the Ultrasound Machine.
The Public Health Minister also met and interacted with a Brazilian Medical Brigade which is currently in Lethem conducting a four-day outreach, from March 2 to 5, 2019. They will be looking at general medical cases along with some specialists who will look at specific health illnesses.
