“Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware, fire can happen anywhere”
─ Schoolchildren benefit from fire prevention activity
DPI, Guyana, Friday, October 12, 2018
As part of activities slated for fire prevention week, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) hosted a fire safety fair today for students along the East Bank Demerara (EBD) at the Providence Stadium.
Fire Prevention Officer of the GFS, Nigel Gravesande, told the Department of Public Information (DPI), “We want a safety conscious environment and we need to start first with our children because they are the ones who will have to change the environment in terms of safety. We will sensitize them on fire, fire behaviour and what to do in those situations”.
He also noted that the secondary school students will be taught how to use a fire extinguisher as a way to safeguard themselves and prevent further damage in cases of fire.
The Fire Prevention Officer also encouraged residents to take preventative measures against fire hazards, especially as the country observes Fire Prevention Week.
This year’s activities are being observed under the theme, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware, fire can happen anywhere” from October 10-17.
