Mainstay/Whyaka preparations on track to host Heritage Day

The spotlight will be on Mainstay/Whyaka, Pomeroon-Supenaam, Region Two which was selected to host this year’s Heritage Day activities on September 10.

Toshao of the village, and chairman of the National Toshaos Council, Joel Fredericks in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA) noted that only minor works remain to be completed for the big day. These include the renovation of a few benabs at the site.

Fredericks said this activity is central to the village and since “we’ve been involved in tourism, we always have the beach to a standard so there is not much preparation that needs to be done there.”

The experience at this year’s Heritage Day would be different when compared to the past, according to Fredericks. Flood lights will be installed which would enable the activities to continue into the night. The installation of the lights is a joint effort among the village council, churches and the Mainstay sports club.

The Chairman stated, “We would bright up the place so when you come to Mainstay you would see a whole different transformation from last year to now.”

The Chairman is urging all Guyanese to be a part of the celebrations which he said would be unforgettable.  Traditional indigenous foods, beverages, craft, dancee, songs, and sports will all be a part of the celebration.

The Month of September is being observed and celebrated as Indigenous Heritage Month; under the theme “Our culture, earth’s future, Save the environment, live the indigenous way.”
