DPI, Guyana, Monday, April 29, 2019

Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings toured Bagotville on Sunday to listen to the concerns of residents of the West Bank of Demerara.

She was accompanied by the Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region 3 (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), Jennifer Dougall. Residents were allowed to convey their concerns. Among those raised were the urgent need for the installation of streetlights, a need for purified water, recreational field (mostly for afternoon exercise) and internet access at strategic areas within the Bagotville community.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Cummings informed them of the current political situation that Guyana has been experiencing since the December 21 Vote.

She also advised “there is no need to be alarmed or anxious… Our government is legitimate and President David Granger remains the Head of State until another President is sworn in.”

“We [the government] are law-abiding citizens, and with the great leadership of his Excellency President David Granger, when GECOM has completed its process and elections is called, then so be it, we are prepared… But, we must have house-to-house registration,” Minister Cummings said during the very informative and interactive meeting at the community centre.

She noted further of the progress made under the coalition government. “Since we became a government, the old age pension was raised from $7,500 to $20,500 public servants also saw a boost from $5,900 to $8,000, a 35% increase.”
