The construction of a modern facility for Abram Zuil Secondary School is long-awaited and overdue. However, the wait is over since this project will be made a reality in 2019 and will be completed in 2020.

The Consultancy firm, E&A Consultancy, last week met with the Regional Administration, Department of Education and Senior Staff of the Abram Zuil Secondary School to confirm the final design for the New Abram Zuil Secondary School, to commence construction later this year.

The staff and Education Officials grilled the design team for all the necessary non-academic standards as it relates to modern secondary schools, squeezing every usable space for an additional classroom or new drama or music room.

This design is in keeping with the standards set by the Ministry of Education as it relates to current needs for secondary education. Also, the team from the school, which included Headteacher, Jennifer Taylor and Deputy Headteacher, Jerome Rajpersaud are pleased with the draft design presented by the consultants.

Regional Education Officer (REO), Nichola Matthews noted that there would be five classrooms for each Grade; from 7 through 11 and 9. There will also be all the streams for Grades 10 and 11. Laboratories for Chemistry, Physics and Biology, also Industrial Technology workshops, home economics labs, Computer Lab, Music Room, Drama Room and all the amenities for the teachers too.

Regional Executive Officer (REO), Denis Jaikaran endorsed the design – a two-storey E-Shaped academic block, selected by the staff of the school. He noted that with all the modern amenities of the school, students would be able to access a higher quality of education. He also commended the design team for their timely delivery of the first draft. The final design of the new building will be presented soon.

The initial site visit for the design and construction of a new Abram Zuil Secondary School was made last month at the present site by the Regional Executive Officer, Regional Engineer, Department of Education and School Representatives along with the Architect, Structural Engineer and Consultant Representatives.

The process, before construction, involved the design of the school’s layout and a two-storied academic block to cater for 150 students. After this design is approved, the construction will be published for public tender, and following the award of the National Tender Board, the construction phase will commence and last for approximately twelve months. Students displaced due to construction will be housed at the Johanna Cecilia Secondary School where facilities are being put into place.
