According to Regional Executive Officer, Ovid Morrison the modern facility will offer a wide range of health services while the other two existing hospitals will offer particular specialized services.

“This will be a state-of-the-art hospital and we intend to convert the other two into specialised health facilities. For example, Maternal and Child health services would be primarily conducted at the Fort Wellington Hospital while substance abuse and other mental health-related cases will be dealt with as a special service at the Mahaicony Hospital,” Morrison told DPI.

The health facility is expected to benefit thousands of persons living in the region and will also eliminate the need for persons to be referred to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital or health facilities in Region Four.

With the establishment of the hospital, it is expected necessary service will be more accessible and neighbouring health facilities will not be overburden with patients coming from outside of the respective areas. It will also raise the status of the region as they are heading one step closer to universal and inclusive health coverage.

The REO noted that with all region’s 2019 project successfully rolled out, they will now focus on this and other significant projects which they have envisioned for 2020.
