More emphasis on developing human resources in education sector for 2018

Increasing teachers in the system, creating stimulating learning environments and greater emphasis on early childhood education and spending $4.7B to upgrade infrastructure are among the measures by the government to improve the quality of education.

These were outlined by the Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, during his presentation of the 2018 National Budget to the National Assembly today. Minister Jordan noted there is a clear need for reform and innovation across all levels of education delivery.

To ensure this is achieved, in 2018 there will be:

• An addition of 335 trained teachers in the system.
• Continuation of the Digital Classroom Programme with priority to creating e-material for improved learning in classrooms.
• Construction of practical instruction departments at secondary schools in Mabaruma, Bartica, Mahdia.
• Rollout of 200 early childhood resource kits.
• Continued roll out of READ PLAY LOVE mass media campaign.
• Reconstruction of St Roses High and Wismar Christianburg Secondary.
• New secondary schools at Good Hope and Parfaite Harmonie.
• $2.4B subvention for the University of Guyana.
• Increase in Remote Area Incentive (RAI) from $9,000 and $12,600 respectively. This reflects an increase of 80 percent.

These initiatives are all geared towards harnessing the country’s human capital.
