More than just talk! La Parfaite Harmonie gets lights

─ Schoonard Access Road and Canal No. 1 to La Parfaite Harmonie are next

DPI, Guyana, Friday, August 30, 2019

The Coalition Government has added new meaning to the proverb ‘put your money with your mouth is’ by installing street lights in sections of La Parfaite Harmonie, after making the pledge at a community meeting on August 10, 2019.

So far, 15 light-emitting-diode (LED) lights have been installed at intersections along the access road to La Parfaite Harmonie from the red bridge at Canal. No. 1. Residents across the spectrum welcomed this development that is directed to improve the living standards within the community.

Jeff Marks, one of the maintenance workers contracted to clean trenches within the West Bank of Demerara community, told the Department of Public Information (DPI), “the lights are good. I don’t live here, but for the community, the lights are very good and I am glad if the government can keep up the work and put more lights on more streets so that everybody in the community can benefit.”

A housewife, Linda Carroll, said “it is a good gesture because when you go out and are returning late at nights and it’s kind of dark, you’re scared. So, it is a good move.” Carroll said that the lights would be a deterrent to criminal elements in the neighbourhood.

A hot-dog and plantain-chip vendor, Clifford Chung also signalled his approval of the streetlights installation and noted its importance. “It is necessary… this is a wide area and [with] a lot of entrances and exits. So, it is important people must get to see where they are going.”

These works were executed under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure after Him. Jaipaul Sharma, Minister within the Ministry, made the commitment during a community meeting at La Parfaite Harmonie Primary School. The minister noted, approximately 100 streetlights will be put in place at specific sections in the community.

According to the ministry’s Manager for Traffic, Safety and Maintenance, Kester Hinds, additional lights will be installed along Schoonard Access and Canal No.1 access roads to La Parfaite Harmonie. These LED lights are more energy-efficient and outlast the sodium-vapour lamps. The installation of LED lights assists the Coalition Government to stay true to its pledge to transform Guyana into a Green-Economy, as outlined by its Green State Development Strategy: Vision 2040.
