New Abram Zuil Secondary School by September 2020

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, April 23, 2019

The Abram Zuil Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast is to be rebuilt as a state-of-the-art learning institution fit for 750 students.

The current building is not conducive to learning and in recognition of this the Education Ministry through the Regional Democratic Council had decided to reconstruct the facility.

According to the Regional Education Officer (ag), Region Two, Nicola Matthews, the signing of the design and mobilisation of the project will occur by September.

“We will have our consultation with the parents and teachers to let them know what is the way forward,” Matthews said.

The initial site visit for the design and construction of the new Abram Zuil Secondary School was done in early April, during which the Regional Executive Officer, Regional Engineer, Department of Education and school representatives met with the architect, structural engineer and consultant representative who will be in charge of the school’s construction.

“We’ll have to take down [the school building] to ensure that Abram Zuil can have a better environment to work in,” Matthews added.

The school’s layout will include a three-story academic block which will cater for 750 students. After the design is approved, the construction will be published for public tender. Following the award by the National Tender Board, the school’s construction will last for 12 months.

Students displaced due to construction, will be housed at the Johanna Cecilia Secondary School where facilities will be put in place to accommodate them using some of the Region’s 2019 budget.

The Regional Executive Officer, Denis Jaikaran said the he is happy to have this long-awaited project start. According to MP Haimraj Rajkumar, in furthering educational developments in the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region, the Government has allocated $2B for education development.

The Ministry of Education has committed to improving the quality of education being delivered nationwide and as such has embarked on several projects and initiatives to improve educational infrastructure, curriculum, quality of teachers among other areas in education to improve learning outcomes.
