No Asbestos at Christianburg-Wismar Secondary School
Ministry of Education, Press Release – Friday, August 31, 2018
This statement is in response to an article that appeared in the August 30, 2018 edition of the Guyana Times newspaper under the headline, “Asbestos discovered at Christianburg-Wismar Secondary School”.
An inquiry into the matter revealed that the information was brought to the attention of the Regional Executive Officer of Region 10 on August 15, 2018.
An investigation was done which indicated that asbestos was not present in any part of the building. This was ascertained by testing a sample of the material suspected to be asbestos found in the ceiling.
Consequently, a request was made for the contractor to resume work on the building in an effort to have the building ready for use in the time allotted.
The Ministry of Education wishes to categorically state that there should be no health concerns by parents, students and teachers regarding the use of the building when school reopens on September 3, 2018.
