Press Release – Canadian High Commissioner calls on Foreign Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd, today met with High Commissioner of Canada to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, Her Excellency Lilian Chatterjee.

The High Commissioner reiterated Canada’s commitment to enhancing relations with Guyana. Furthermore, she noted that the recently launched Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce will further strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Minister Todd in turn expressed gratitude for the continued support received from Canada. The Foreign Minister noted that Canada continues to be a major trading partner for Guyana.

The meeting also discussed diaspora engagement, development, governance, and co-operation among other areas.

Diplomatic relations between Guyana and Canada predated Guyana’s independence with the opening of the High Commission of Canada in Georgetown, in March 1964. These relations were then fully formalised on the occasion of Guyana’s independence.

The two countries often collaborate closely at the international level through organisations such as the Lima Group, the Organization of American States (OAS), Commonwealth, and the United Nations.
