Young people of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara now have a safe space to practice and foster their sporting talents.

Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency Joseph Harmon on Saturday commissioned a community playground in the area on Saturday in keeping with an earlier promise.

The ground was a collaborative effort between central government, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and the Plaisance/Industry Neighbourhood Democratic Council.

The Director-General noted that residents had highlighted the state of the unfinished playground during a community walkabout last year. Work on the ground begun under the previous administration but was left incomplete and it overtaken by vegetation.

“The young men had nowhere proper to play so we undertook to have resources allocated to it,” Harmon said. The finished facility is fenced and has a sanitary block, a pavilion, and lights.

Several footballs were also presented to the young people in the community.

Demerara-Mahaica RDC Chair, Genevieve Allen urged the residents to play their role in the upkeep of the ground. “I trust that the community takes ownership of this ground and that our young people will use the facility wisely,” she said.

After the simple commissioning ceremony, the Director-General conducted a walkabout the community and interacted with the residents.
