Reg. 10 top CSEC student secured 9 Grade Ones

ā”€ Mackenzie High School tops the region at CSEC

Gabrielle Prudence of the Mackenzie High School (MHS), is Region 10’s top performer at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC). Prudence gained a total of 9 Grade Ones, 2 Grade Twos and one Grade Three. Following close behind her with 11 passes is Tonesia Jacobis, who also acquired 9 Grade Ones and 2 Grade Twos.

The students credit sacrifices and hard-work to their success and disclosed that they will be pursuing the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in the upcoming school year.

An elated Prudence fought through her emotions to express how she felt about her outstanding performance. “I am speechless, flabbergasted… I feel proud. Waking early in the mornings really affected me throughout the day, my mother ensured I kept at my studies. It was quite a difficult task but Iā€™m happy it paid off,” she said.

She aspires to be a corporate lawyer and will be pursuing Advanced Law at The Bishops’ High School in Georgetown. Prudence was one of six students in the region, who pursued Theatre Arts. Even though it is not offered at her school, she still attended classes for the course at the Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (CWSS). She said it allowed her to qualify for a field that is close to her heart. The young achiever plans to take up theatre as a supplementary job.

Her advice to students who will be sitting the CSEC next year is to ensure they balance their time and not compromise on their study schedule and school assignments.

Her counterpart, Tonesia Jacobis, aspires to be an economist. Among the subjects, she gained Grade Ones in are Economics, Integrated Science, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, English Language and Office Administration. Jacobis will be pursuing business-related subjects at CAPE. She also described the preparation as challenging. “I was determined to do well so I had to give up a lot of recreation and put in the work.ā€ She acknowledged her family, especially her mother Rayann Jacobis, whom she said stood by her throughout the entire journey.

Several students from other schools also took spots in the Region’s ‘Top Ten’; a list that was dominated in previous years by only MHS students and in recent years by MHS and CWSS students.

Linden Foundation Secondary School’s (LFSS) top student Isaiah Farrell, secured 7 Grade Ones, 3 Grade Twos and 1 Grade Three. The Agriculture student said he is thrilled to have brought recognition to his school, knowing that there was a stigma attached to it institution for a while.

” Growing up I always heard LFSS is not a school that anyone wants to attend. So, I am happy that myself and other classmates have done our school proud. It is a very good feeling and I am in a happy place today.ā€ He credited the hard work to his teachers whom he said, played a major role in ensuring he reaped success. Farrell will be pursuing Geology at the University of Guyana.

Shenea Ross, also a student of MHS, was not surprised with but is nonetheless thankful for her achievement. She copped 7 Grade Ones. She praised her teachers who played an integral role in ensuring she was successful as well as her family and friends. The aspiring lawyer and will be pursuing CAPE Law at MHS.

New Silver City Secondary School student, Taliyah Gill also secured 7 Grade Ones, 3 Grade Twos and 1 Grade Three. Other top performers in the region include Keon McLean of MHS, who secured 7 Grade Ones and 2 Grade Threes; Tahj Bascom of MHS who secured 6 Grade Ones and Te-Nu-Sal Headley of CWSS who also gained 6 Grade Ones.
