DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, October 31, 2018
The contracts for weeding, cleaning and maintenance of the road shoulders on the West Coast, Region Five and Corentyne, Region Six were awarded in accordance with procurement act to contractors based on their geographic location.
This was revealed today by Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson during the 98th Sitting of the National Assembly.
Minister Patterson clarified that the project was publicly tendered where the contractors were selected from the prequalified list approved by the Ministry of Finance’s National Procurement Tender Administration Board in 2018.
“In ensuring a levelling playfield in the bidding of government’s contract and to ensure that at least 20 per cent of public contracts are awarded to small businesses, the ministry has been awarding contracts in accordance with this, by inviting small contractors from the prequalified list to bid for the project,” Minster Patterson explained. The contracts awarded totalled $120M.
According to Minister Patterson, this process began on October 2017 where persons were asked persons to express their interest. From that list, 178 contractors were approved. From that list, 59 indicated their preference to work in Region Two, 149 in Region Three, 175 in Region Four, 119 in Region Five and 80 in Region Six.
Minister Patterson said one of the criteria used is to ensure that there is one contract per contractor.
