Rehab of police stations’ privacy rooms for abused victims will soon get underway 

GINA, GUYANA, Thursday, May 4, 2017

Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan told media operatives on Wednesday that the government is working with the Guyana Police Force to rehabilitate police stations to allow rape victims and domestic violence complaints to be treated in privacy.

Minister Ramjattan said that they are currently working on rehabilitating eight police stations with rooms to allow victims of abuse to relate their story in privacy.

“The first steps are being made to ensure that we do have rehabilitated existing policing stations that can then accommodate at least a room,” he added.

Minister Ramjattan noted that the service requires good social workers or police officers trained in the area.

Minister Ramjattan said that the work will take some time because of the procurement process.

About a dozen other stations will be rehabilitated under the Citizen Security Programme, Minister Ramjattan added. “Some money has been allocated for the rehabilitation of I think, 12 police stations across the country, but the government also is rehabilitating a number of them,” he explained further.

The minister noted that the government is working to modernise most, if not all of the police stations, within a two – year period.
