The riverine community of Rivers View will have its chance to show off its rich Indigenous culture this year, as the village has been selected the National Heritage Village in observance of Indigenous Heritage Month in September 2019.
This was confirmed by the National Toshaos Council (NTC). Chairman of the Council, Toshao Nicholas Fredericks informed the NTC Executive of the decision, following a discussion with the Ministers of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock.
Home of our Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, River’s View is located on the border of Region 10 on the Essequibo River, opposite the mining town of Bartica, Region 7.
The community will make history as the first village in the Upper Demerara-Berbice, to host a National Indigenous Heritage Day since the celebration started in September 1995.
River’s View can be accessed by river, with a one-hour speed boat ride from Parika, or by air through Bartica, then 5 minutes by boat across the mighty Essequibo River.
Last year’s Heritage Village was Shulinab – the only Makushi village in the South Rupununi, Region 9.
