SOCU Audit report with Police Legal Advisor

─ Police commissioner to advise Pres. Granger on way forward with SOCU probe

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, May 15, 2019

The report of a recently concluded audit of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) is now with the Police Legal Advisor for advice. The investigation of specialised police unit was ordered by Commissioner of Police, Leslie James, in February 2019 following allegations of misappropriation of funds.

Responding to questions about a possible “shake-up” at the organisation, President David Granger, on Wednesday, said:

“SOCU is an organic part of the Guyana Police Force so in terms of investigation and any recommendation it will be up to the Commissioner of the Police.”

The President also said that he would be advised by the Minister of Public Security.

Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan recently stated that in light of the findings in the report, termination and transfer of officials attached to the white-collar crime-fighting organization would be required.
