Statement on the COVID-19 situation in Guyana by Prime Minister, Hon. Brigadier Mark Phillips and Chair of the National COVID-19 Task Force

My fellow Guyanese brothers and sisters, we are all faced with the challenges of the Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) that has plagued the world. Many have lost their lives, while others are forced to be locked away in isolation or quarantine.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced all of us to make major adjustments to our daily routines. It has also caused severe socio-economic challenges all around.

As the number of cases continues to increase daily nationwide, I want to remind you that it is the duty of each and every one of us to ensure that we play our part in combating this deadly virus.

We must ensure that we act responsibly and adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines. This is extremely important in order for you to protect yourself and help prevent the spread of the virus to others.

I urge you to:

  • Practice washing your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds with soap and running water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser with 60 to 80 percent ethanol.
  • If you need to cough or sneeze, ensure that you cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or use a flexed elbow.
  • Avoid close contact and practice physical distancing by staying at least six feet away from other persons.
  • Stay at home or self-isolate from others in the household if you feel unwell, and seek medical care if your symptoms become worse.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Use face masks when out in public, and,
  • Avoid crowds and large gatherings

As Prime Minister and Chairperson of the COVID-19 Task Force, I want to assure you that our Government continues to assess the national impact of this pandemic, and we are doing everything possible to monitor and provide effective response measures to bring relief to your communities. Continue to stay safe in this testing time. We are a strong and united people and together we will overcome.
