DPI, Guyana, Thursday, December 12, 2019
Twenty-two Region 10 beekeepers have received bees that were promised by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Another eight will receive theirs on Saturday. The 30 Lindeners had participated in an apiculture and business management training last June which was organised by the ministry, the Linden Enterprise Network, and the Regional Democratic Council.
Making the delivery on Thursday was Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture Hon. Valerie Adams-Yearwood.
“We felt that this is necessary and important to do this training to enhance apiculture in Region 10. So, I know that all the participants in the programme, they are well set and ready to go and excited to receive their hives.”
The minister said there was great potential for beekeeping in the region.
“I am excited about putting it in the hands of the people so that they can earn from it and Region 10 can be the region with the highest honey production.”
Myrtle Gentle, one of the recipients, said she was grateful for the opportunity presented by the ministry.
Noting Minister Adams-Yearwood’s involvement in the process, Gentle said: “She is one of the ministers that looks out for you and she is very concerned about agriculture.”
The farmer added that she learnt a lot at the workshop, which helped her be a better beekeeper.
Participants were instructed in both the practical and theoretical aspects of beekeeping by expert beekeepers.
