Ultrasound Dept. at Skeldon Hospital sees 1,300 patients in 5 months

DPI, Guyana, Friday, June 8, 2018

The Skeldon Hospital in East Berbice has recently seen an influx of persons accessing Ultrasound services at the health facility, during the first five months of this year.

As of June 7, 2018, the records show that 1,302 patients have utilised the service.

According to Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, a report from the radiologist Dr. Ulisas Lopez, stationed at the medical facility detailed the number of persons accessing the ultrasound services.

Dr. Lopez also noted that, “in other places patients would have to pay but here its free so all the pregnant mothers, even from Suriname, come here.” He added that the service is critical since it can be the first step to life-saving and other much-needed medical interventions.

The Ultrasound service was introduced to the hospital in January, eliminating referrals to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital. Further, persons no longer have to go to private facilities to pay for the service, since Skeldon is now a hub offering the services free of cost.
