Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup campaign kicks off

The Women’s T20 Cricket World Cup campaign, organised to garner support for defending champions – the West Indies team, kicked off today at the Stabroek Market. The campaign saw scores of Guyanese assembling at the launch of a series of events scheduled to promote the matches scheduled to be hosted in Guyana.
Minister of Social Cohesion Dr. George Norton, Director of Sport, Christopher Jones, Assistant Director of Sport, Melissa Dow-Richardson, Mayor of Georgetown, Patricia Chase-Green were among other officials at the event.
Guyana is one of three host nations for the upcoming world cup which runs from November 9 to 24, 2018 and will host a total of 11 games, including three on the opening day of the tournament. Games in Guyana are as follows:

The other two host nations are Antigua and Barbuda and St. Lucia.
Minister Norton called on Guyanese to give their full support to the cricketers adding that Guyana is proud to be one of three host countries.
“Our participation in this event sends a strong message to the world that this ‘Land of Many Waters’ is gender conscious. It shows our commitment to the empowerment and development of women in all aspects of life” Minister Norton stated.
The Minister also said he wants more Guyanese women to be added to the list of talented cricketers such as Indomatie Goordial, Candacy Atkins, Shemaine Campbelle, Subrina Munroe and Tremayne Smartt who have made Guyana proud.
The West Indies team selected to play in the tournament includes, Stafanie Taylor – captain, Shania Abdool, Merissa Aguilleira, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Britney Cooper, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Aria Fortune, Shabika Gajnabi, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Qiana Joseph, Kycia Knight, Hayley Matthews, Natasha McLean, Anisa Mohammed, Chedean Nation, Akeira Peters, Karishma Ramharack and Shakera Selman.
