180 water tanks delivered to Bethany, Supenaam residents

Residents of Bethany and Supenaam Riverbank in Region Two are now benefitting from improved access to water following the distribution of 180 water tanks on Tuesday.

The 450-gallon tanks cost $6 million and fulfil a commitment made by President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali to Bethany’s Toshao Sonia Latchman in January.

Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal

Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal announced that a permanent solution is on the way as a new well will be dug in the community beginning in March. This will provide residents with better access to clean water.

“This is where the support from the tanks comes in handy and that is why we have started this process,” he stated.

Other communities to benefit from the drilling of new wells include St Monica, Dredge Creek and Karawab.

The Guyana Water Incorporated’s (GWI) in-house team will also drill wells at St John’s, Jacklow, Abraham’s Creek and St Denny’s.

Region Two has already seen completed wells in Akawini, Wakapoa, Hackney, Friendship and Malborough.

A well is currently being drilled in Siriki while Wakapoa, Kabakaburi and Mainstay will also benefit from a similar project.

These efforts align with the government’s aggressive programme to provide all communities with 100 per cent access to potable water by year-end.

Minister Croal reiterated the government’s commitment to equal access to services. He spoke about the 2025 budget which includes the construction of a new nursery school in Bethany.

A state-of-the-art hospital will soon be commissioned and operationalised at Lima, advancing healthcare access there.

Toshao Latchman said the community has benefitted from various initiatives implemented by the government over the years that have improved residents’ livelihoods.

She also announced that development will accelerate in 2025, with $57.5 million in grants allocated to Bethany through the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.

Bethany has received more than $94 million in grants for developmental projects over the past four years.
