Thirty (30) Lindeners recently participated in a one-week training exercise, in apiculture and business management facilitated by the Linden Enterprise Network (LEN).
During the training exercise, the participants engaged in both the practical and theoretical aspects of the training, which was facilitated by expert beekeepers. The participants were presented with certificates upon completion of the programme. Additionally, they received hives and beekeeping overalls and were assured of start-up loans from LEN to commence their beekeeping businesses.
Giving remarks at the closing of the programme, Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, with responsibilities for Rural Affairs, Valerie Adams-Yearwood charged the participants to make good use of the training by being diligent and ingenious.
“I want you to stick to the business at hand, be diligent in what you do, be self-motivated, don’t wait for somebody to come and spur you on, it’s your business, and you must be serious about what you do.”
The minister encouraged them to also look at the “big picture of agriculture and agro-processing” since there are many by-products manufactured from honey that are in demand locally and internationally.
“Think about all the possibilities. This is a time to begin to think big and the only way you could do that, you have to see yourself as somebody who can become big.”
Several sponsors came on board to support the venture which includes the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) and The Church of Jesus Christ, among others. Twenty-five (25) participants went home with one hive, while five outstanding participants received two.
