African Street Theatre heralds emancipation activities

DPI Guyana, Tuesday, July 24, 2018

The African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) is this year hosting the “Africa Street Theatre” event on Main Street Avenue as part of its pre-Emancipation activities.

Coming under the theme ‘25 Years of Activism, Community Service and Servant Leadership’, this event which began today will run until July 31 from 10:00hrs to 17:00hrs.

The Street Theatre will showcase the African performing arts, whilst providing local businesses with the opportunity to participate and showcase various items which are derived from African cultural influence. Some of the items that were displayed included African art, craft, t-shirts, sculptures, jewellery and garments.

While observing the preparation of the participants, the Department of Public Information (DPI) met with Nona Khan who displayed her attractive hand painted t-shirts and souvenirs which included flags and maps for children and adults. Khan, who is participating in the street fair for the first time, is eager to have been afforded the opportunity and is anticipating an exceptional show.

Also present, displaying his sculptures and jewellery was Kennett Nelson. He has been a part of the ACDA street fair for many years. Nelson, like Khan, is pleased to have been given the opportunity to share his work and believes that it is good to celebrate this Emancipation and to encourage unity and harmony as a nation.

This initiative by the ACDA will help local businesses to come forward to display their work and also for the public to have a wide range of items to choose from for this year’s Emancipation occasions.

Among its other planned activities, ACDA also will host an Emancipation Spelling Bee Competition on August 1 and September 22, the first rounds were held on July 14 and 16.  On July 28, the association will host an Afrobeat party at the 704 Lounge and an Emancipation Spiritual Tribute at the Square of the Revolution from July 29 to 31.

On Emancipation Day, the group will also be at the National Park showcasing African culture at its best.
