Agriculture workforce receives boost!

“Graduates, you now have the potential to strengthen the agriculture sector by using the knowledge, skills and experience that you have gained, coupled with your creativity and innovative ideas, to improve traditional Agriculture and come up with new solutions to solve some of the common challenges faced in agriculture today.”
This was the message delivered by Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Hon. Valerie Adams-Yearwood to the graduates at the Guyana School of Agriculture’s (GSA) 55th passing out ceremony held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC).
In her feature address, Minister Adams-Yearwood reminded the students of the government’s commitment to ensuring free education for all Guyanese.
“On the first of this month, our president, while he gave the [Emancipation] address at Union, he said, that this country, this government, your government, will soon make education free from nursery to university.”
The students graduated in the fields of Forestry, Agro-Processing, General Agriculture, Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health. Minister Adams-Yearwood also touched on the much-anticipated oil wealth.
“Everybody is going crazy over oil, but let me say to you… you can’t drink the oil and we can’t eat the oil products, so remain in agriculture!”
The student copping the most awards at this year’s graduation, inclusive of having the most outstanding performance at farm practical and gaining the Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) prize was Andy Bansgopal. He managed to claim prizes for the Best Performance in Rice Agronomy, Best Performance in Agro-processing, Best Performance in English and Mathematics, Best Performance in Plant Pathology, Best Performance in Entrepreneurship and the Best Overall Performance in the Diploma in Agriculture Class.
