DPI, Guyana, Monday, July 30, 2018
Seventy youths who graduated from the 15th Youth Leadership Programme on Sunday were charged to be the ambassadors of the change they wished to see realised in their respective communities.
Delivering this charge was Deputy Director of Youth, Leslyn Boyce who noted that the government recognises the nation’s youth as one of its most valuable assets, hence the establishment of youth empowerment programmes.
“I wish to encourage you to become good role models, be honest, be respectful as well go out into the public and shine and be the change you want to see,” Boyce told the participants,
The Deputy-Director of Education and Training attached to the Department of Youth Ronald Austin Jr. said that the department is satisfied with the progress made to empower the nation’s future leaders. “We are extremely proud that numerous youth organisations have been exposed to the leadership programme with its targeted contents … we are seeing the impact of our work.”
Guest speaker at the graduation ceremony, Director (ag) of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig commended the participants for their engagement in the training programme.
“In our society, we may have been taught to believe that leadership is a skill that a few possess or are gifted with; but the truth is leadership can be learned under the right circumstances and with the correct approach. Anyone can become a leader but you must have the motivation and determination to become one.”
Craig assured the graduates that they must never be afraid to make mistakes as it provides the opportunity to learn from and move forward in achieving their goals.
The 70 graduates, joined the over eight hundred youths who have already successfully completed the programme which was implemented in 2016. The training was facilitated by the Department of Youth under the Ministry of Presidency. It is designed to enhance the leadership qualities, communication, management, effective public speaking, problem-solving and decision making, time management.
