DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, December 11, 2019

His Worship the Mayor, Pandit Ubraj Narine, and his deputy, Alfred Mentore, have been reelected by councillors of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), after a year of what was said to be, exemplary service to the people of Georgetown.

The duo’s reelection received the full support of councillors on the government side.

Mayor Narine promised to continue the work started during his first term, and he urged the councillors to move forward with a clean heart for the good of the city.

“I urge us all to work together for a smoother flow in 2020; more understanding, communication and dedication to better serve the people of this great city we call Georgetown,” he stated.

Deputy Mayor Mentore said he too was elated to serve again.

“[Our re-election] clearly shows that the mayor and myself have been doing something wonderful here at the council for you to repose the confidence in us, for us to continue in 2020,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Narine said greater things were in store for the city and country in the new year but stressed that the council could not do it on its own.

“There are several things that we need to do. For example, I want to see a different Stabroek area where people can go and relax and go with their families. I do have a proposal which I submitted to the Ministry of Communities, to NICIL, and we only need central government blessings to restructure the market area.

As councillors, we need the peoples’ support as well – the residents, the bus and car drivers, the vendors and the man on the road,” he added.

Present at the elections were Minister of Public Health, the Hon. Volda Lawrence and former city mayor, Hamilton Green. Green charged the council to work in the best interest of the people

“You must recognise that you are the charge of the capital city, and you must discharge your responsibility with courage, conviction, honesty and purpose,” the former Mayor noted.

The council also elected a seven-member finance committee, which included Councillor Oscar Clarke as Chair and councillor Ivelaw Henry as Vice-Chair. The other members are Councillors Tricia Richards, Yvonne Ferguson, Mentore, Dawn Stewart, and Bishram Kupen.
