British High Commissioner calls on AG Nandlall
Today, the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall, met with the British High Commissioner, H.E. Greg Quinn, at the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Legal Affairs.
After exchanging pleasantries, the two Officials discussed a number of important initiatives in the legal sector, including legislative changes.
In this regard, the Attorney General explained that it is the desire of the new People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration to address the numerous deficiencies of the Anti-money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Act. Further, Minister Nandlall informed the High Commissioner of the Government’s plan to amend the State Asset Recovery Agency Act.
Mr. Quinn emphasised that the British Government has an interest in Guyana remaining compliant under the AML/CFT regime and expressed his agreement that Guyana should have some asset recovery legislative framework, expressing a recognition of the deficiencies in the current legislative framework.
In relation to the fledging oil and gas sector, the Attorney General updated the High Commissioner on the Government’s plan to get advice from Cabinet on the status of the Natural Resource Fund legislation which was enacted after the passage of the no confidence motion and in the absence of the Opposition in the National Assembly, and to immediately begin work on Local Content legislation and related policies.
In this regard, the Attorney General inquired about any grants from Her Majesty’s Government that may assist Guyana in furthering its robust legislative agenda over the coming years, specifically, in the area of law revision. The British High Commissioner endeavoured to inquire about same.
