DPI, Guyana, Monday, June 8, 2020

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has condemned the deliberate destruction caused to a section of the newly extended East Coast of Demerara Highway by the business enterprise Best Buy Variety Store.

In a press release, the Ministry stated that on Thursday, June 4, 2020, persons from the Best Buy Variety Store were seen dismantling the road features installed in the vicinity of Non-Pariel for customer parking.

It was noted that the road feature was installed “for the protection and safety of pedestrians and cyclists on the Main Road on the East Coast of Demerara, particularly between the recently completed road expansion sections from Better Hope to Belfield.”

The release also underscored that the ministry strictly prohibits the demolition road features and is notifying business owners and residents that permission will “not be granted for the removal of the safety features along the East Coast of Demerara Highway.”

Best Buy Variety Store is being held to account for the destruction of public property and will have to pay damages in the amount of $836,299.

To prevent similar activities from reoccurring, the Public Infrastructure Ministry is calling on persons to report any incidents of destruction to road safety features.

They can contact the Ministry’s Public Relations Department on telephone number 592-227-0799, email at mopi.guyana@gmail.com or Facebook Messenger at Ministry of Public Infrastructure.
