Diwali Celebration goes virtual

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport celebrated the festival of lights with cultural entertainment through its first virtual National Diwali Festival.

The event which was hosted by Mr. Aditya Persaud and Ms. Yasmini Sarjoo, showcased numerous talents through song and dance, and was live streamed on the Ministry’s Facebook page Saturday evening.

The virtual celebration featured pre-recorded and live performances by several local artistes, including 2019’s Chutney Monarch Competition winner, Mr. Steven Ramphal, and first runner up at the Miss Global International 2016, Ms. Poonam Singh.

Berbice Delights, Ishara Dance Troupe, and the National Dance Company also performed in recognition of the holiday.

His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali described Diwali as one of the most important festivals on the Hindu calendar.

“The ageless message of Diwali is that light will overcome darkness, knowledge will override ignorance and hope will prevail over despair. Diwali instils in us the confidence that with hope and unity, we can overcome any challenge,” President Ali said in his Diwali greetings to the nation. An annual holiday, Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil.
