The wall of the Public Buildings is now lined with portraits of President David Granger and eight former presidents, Arthur Chung, Linden Forbes Burnham, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Hugh Desmond Hoyte, Janet Jagan, Samuel Hinds, Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar.

The Gallery of Presidents was today unveiled at the Public Buildings, in observance of the country’s 53rd Independence Anniversary. President Granger along with former presidents Samuel Hinds, Bharrat Jagdeo and Donald Ramotar witnessed the unveiling.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton Scotland explained that the “creation of this Gallery of Presidents serves as a tribute to the Presidents of Guyana both past and present… in deep appreciation for their exceptional and dedicated service to Guyana.”

Dr. Scotland added that the idea for this tribute was birthed following multiple discussions with his personal assistant, the clerk of the National Assembly, other members of staff, photographer Geoffrey La Rose and artists Merlene Ellis and Louis Jordan.

La Rose, the proud photographer, undertook the task of procuring and restoring, where necessary, the images of the presidents, while Ellis had the duty of preparing the wooden photo frames, framing and aligning of the photos.

Jordan had the responsibility for creating the large wooden sign on which the words ‘Gallery of Presidents’ are inscribed.
