Gov’t creating enabling environment for diaspora’s return, investment

Guyanese living abroad are being assured of an enabling environment should they choose to return home and invest.

The assurance was given by His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who said today that his Administration remains open to all forms of economic investment.

From high-quality education and health care, to improved government services, the Head of State said the Government intends to provide advanced services to encourage people to return home.

The President believes that overseas-based Guyanese have been, and continue to contribute to Guyana’s economic advancement. Dr Ali said his administration also understands that those individuals have grown accustomed to a particular quality of service. To this end, the President said the Government is moving to strengthen systems for all.

“Coming back on a permanent basis, issues of security, health care, education, sports services, government services, are critical areas too that are of interest to the diaspora and these are the areas we are targeting, investing in, we will improve to make it better and to ensure that we create and enabling environment,” Dr Ali said during an interview with US-based radio personality Farook Juman.

Guyana’s emerging oil and gas sector has opened doors for new areas of investment, while strengthening traditional sectors. Dr Ali said there is “great potential” for the diaspora to bring their capital resources back home.

The government is also currently discussing financial instruments, which the President explained, allows all categories and levels of the diaspora, to be integrated into the development of the country.

“We also have to ensure that we improve our health care system, we improve our education system, we move toward more international standards so that the decision to move becomes easier, because these are some of the critical questions that persons in the diaspora ask.”

Regarding investments here, the President said the opportunities are endless. Dr Ali said the diaspora has a golden opportunity to carve out its own investment path.

“I think that we need to have a positive outlook. the opportunities are there. You cannot understand the opportunities from a third or second hand. You have to come here and look at the areas that the country is moving towards, the opportunities and plan your own path. Government can only create that enabling environment and that is what we are doing,” the President assured.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in November last, launched it Remigration Brochure, which aims to make the process easier for persons in the diaspora to resettle in their homeland.
