Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Hon. Karen Cummings has expressed gratitude to the Group of 77 and China, for their support of Guyana’s ascension to Chairmanship of the group for the year 2020.

Minister Cummings, early Friday, addressed her first organisational meeting of the G77.

“I take the opportunity to express appreciation for the kind words and support expressed at the handing over ceremony this week… We are fully conscious that we cannot do it alone, Guyana will, therefore, count on the full support and collaboration of all the members of the group,” Minister Cummings stated.

She told the grouping that even as the task at hand was serious, there are opportunities for greater development.

“We begin our work in earnest, needless to say, it is an enormous responsibility as 2020 is a significant year for the international community, and certainly for the Group of 77 and China. Guyana is convinced that 2020 also presents us with enormous opportunities,” Minister Cummings added.

Guyana’s Foreign Minister affirmed that the country will discharge its responsibilities with integrity, faithfulness to the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations.

“We are working to finalise a dynamic team under the leadership of Ambassador Rudolph Michael Ten-Pow to discharge the duties of the Chair in New York,” she stated.

Ambassador Ten-Pow is the Permanent Representative and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Guyana to the United Nations.

The Group of 77 and China is a coalition of 135 developing nations, designed to promote its members’ collective economic interests and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.

At its November plenary, the 134 member states elected Guyana by acclamation without pre-conditions.
