GuySuCo to pay Wales workers final severance tomorrow

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, December 6, 2018

Senior GuySuCo officials this evening confirmed that final severance payments for Wales sugar workers will commence tomorrow, Friday, December 7th from 12noon until 6pm.

Payments will be made to over 300 sugar workers following the court ruling on Wednesday, December 5th this week when High Court judge, Justice Sandil Kissoon ruled that the workers are to be paid interest in addition to their severance.

Minister of Agriculture Noel Holder had previously explained that the monies for the payment were secured and GuySuCo is fully prepared to commence payments once Justice Kissoon made his ruling.

Payments will continue on Saturday, December 8th from 9am to 4pm at the Wales Estate Pay Office, on the West Bank of Demerara.

Scores of sugar workers have spoken with DPI indicating that they are pleased to receive their final payments before the Christmas season. Many are planning to utilize the payments – over GY$1,000,000 in some cases – to start small businesses as they move away from the backbreaking work in the sugar cane fields to opening small community grocery shops, rearing chicken and other livestock, operating taxis among other entrepreneurial initiatives.
