Residents of Rosignol, Region 5 (Mahaica-Berbice), have been charged to hold their Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) accountable. This is after they repeatedly raised the issue about non-representation by their opposition-led municipality.

Earlier on Sunday, at a community meeting held with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dr. Karen Cummings, at the Rosignol Primary School, residents complained about what they described as the worsening state of their community. Many spoke of neglect by the NDC through; infrequent garbage disposal, unhealthy and unsanitary conditions of the municipal market, overgrown bushes and dirty and clogged drains.

Resident, Claudette Ghandi, said persons were building structures on government reserves without being reprimanded.

Another resident, ‘Ms. Benjamin’ complained of flooding due to clogged drains, which she said was as a result of the improper garbage disposal. Echoing similar sentiments, another resident added that overgrown bushes is hazardous to especially females working late shifts who regularly traverse the area.

In response Minister Cummings challenged residents to take back their community.

“Hold your NDC accountable,” she urged.

The minister reminded that regardless of party affiliation, an NDC or RDC has the responsibility to look after the interest of its municipality.

“You have to hold them accountable because they are being paid every month, and the central government is giving them millions of dollars in subventions.”

She further enouraged the residents to exercise their rights in the upcoming General and Regional Elections, whenever due. The minister advised that their decisions will not only affect their children but grandchildren.
